They are very extroverted, friendly, and independent hounds. PBGVs tend to be very active and lively. They are good with children and other dogs, although unsuitable for very young children because of their energy and tendency to play bite. They can be rather vocal, as is typical of scenthounds, often if their 'pack' begins howling or singing, the dog will join in, with amusing results. Also, they occasionally find themselves incapable of not howling, especially if they tend to react to a particular song, should the song be heard, even if the dog is asleep it will wake up and begin howling.
Like other hounds, they are stubborn and do not respond as well to training as some owners may like. They tend to do what they want to do unless there is a reward for them. They also have notioriously bad memories, scolding a PBGV once will not teach it anything.
